How to open, edit and convert DOC files

You don’t need to have Microsoft Word to access these documents

A file with DOC file extension is a Microsoft Word document file. This is the default file format used in Microsoft Word 97-2003, while newer versions of MS Word (2007) use the default DOCX file extension.

Microsoft’s DOC file format can store images, formatted text, tables, charts, and other elements common to word processors.

This old DOC format differs from DOCX mainly because it uses ZIP and XML for compress and store content, unlike DOC.

Note : DOC files that have nothing to do with DDOC or ADOC files, so it is important to read the file extension carefully before attempting to open it.

How to Open DOC File Extension

Microsoft Word (version 97 and higher) is the primary program used to open and work with DOC files, but its use is not free (unless you have the free trial version of MS Office).

However, there are free alternatives to Microsoft Office including support for DOC files, such as LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer. Both applications can not only open DOC files, but also edit and save them in the same format. They can even save the DOC file in Microsoft’s latest DOCX format.

If no software Word processor is only installed on your computer and you do not want to add any, Google Docs is an interesting alternative to MS Word. It allows you to upload DOC files to your Google Drive account to view, edit and use them. You even have the option to share the file via your web browser. It is much faster to take this path instead of installing a word processor application. In addition, this application has additional advantages (but also disadvantages) that we will present you in a future article.

Microsoft even has its own free Word Viewer tool that allows you to view DOC files (without editing them) without needing MS Office programs on your computer.

Are you using Chrome web browser? If this is the case, you can open DOC files pretty quickly with the free Google Office Edition for Doc, Sheets and Slides. This tool will open DOC files directly in your browser on the Internet, which will save them to your computer and then re-open them in a DOC opener. It also allows you to drag a local DOC file directly into Chrome and start reading or editing it with Google Docs.

How to convert DOC file

Any good word processor that supports opening a DOC file can most certainly save the file in a different document format. All of the above mentioned software, including Kingsoft Writer, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc. can save a DOC file in a different format.

If you are looking for a specific conversion, like DOC to DOCX, keep in mind what we said above, about MS Office alternatives. Another option to convert a DOC file in DOCX format consists of using a dedicated document converter. For example, the Zamzar website: just download the DOC file from this website to get a number of conversion options.

You can also use a free file converter to convert a DOC file to formats such as PDF and JPG.
