Pyelonephritis without fever: is it an infection of the kidney?

Pyelonephritis is a pathology that women know well, and, to a lesser extent, men. Pyelonephritis is an infection of the kidney that usually occurs in the continuity of infection of the urinary system (cystitis). It is characterized by the presence or absence of certain symptoms. Thinking about pyelonephritis without fever? We take stock of pyelonephritis with you.

From cystitis to pyelonephritis

Usually, during a cystitis, you consult and you are given an ECBU (cytobacteriological examination of urine) to be carried out as quickly as possible. This allows to determine the presence or not of a certain type of bacteria in urine. It also helps to see if your body defends itself by producing antibodies.

The ECBU is used to target the bacteria responsible for cystitis and attack it via taking an adapted antibiotic therapy. It is essential to have an ECBU carried out, under penalty of taking unsuitable antibiotics and risk raising cystitis to the kidneys (pyelonephritis). The bacterium can be escherichia coli, or staphylococcus, for example. These bacteria do not destroy themselves with the same antibiotic treatment.

Features of pyelonephritis

Pyelonephritis is characterized by recognizable symptoms. In general, pyelonephritis appears right after cystitis, which is an infection of the urinary tract. A urinary infection that turns into a kidney infection despite antibiotic therapy is a sign that the right antibiotic has not been administered or that you are facing resistance of the bacteria , whatever it is.

If cystitis is not treated in time with appropriate treatment, the infection may go back from the urinary tract to renal function . The kidneys, if affected by infection, give you several signals and symptoms:

  • You may have fever but also do pyelonephritis without fever . The fever that accompanies pyelonephritis can go beyond 38°5 and in some cases create hallucinations due to febrile state.
  • You may also suffer from intense fatigue and feel completely knocked out by the attack of the bacteria on your kidneys.
  • You may have pain in all about the kidneys , high enough above buttocks.

Acute cystitis or pyelonephritis?

If you have pain even in the kidneys, it is not necessary to ask yourself for a long time: consult a doctor. Acute cystitis can be characterized by pain when urination and the visual presence or not of blood in the urine. Pyelonephritis, in turn, can go unnoticed apart from pain in the kidneys: no fever, no blood, no pain in urination. However, it is essential not to neglect these symptoms . The main risk is to lose a kidney, too attacked by bacteria and infection.

Kidneys are vital organs : that’s why it is absolutely not necessary to wait if you have doubts about your pains. It is quite possible to do pyelonephritis without fever. This does not mean that your body is not fighting against bacterium in the presence.

Consultation, diagnosis and sometimes ultrasound of the urinary tract can reveal fragility involved in the chronic repetition of cystitis or pyelonephritis in some patients. Urinary and kidney infections are dangerous to women’s health and deserve preventive measures in order to avoid recurrence of cystitis or pyelonephritis.

To avoid urinary or kidney infection:

  • Drink plenty of water;
  • Wear cotton underwear;
  • Stay away from destress sources too.
