The window sill is an indispensable part of the construction of a window since it guarantees, thanks to its elevation, the flow of rainwater and prevents water from going up under the window. This is how the joinery of the window frames and the facade are protected. But what are the techniques for making a window sill?

Window sill is a technical element of the facade of a house. It is a piece of masonry that can be prefabricated or cast in place. The window sill plays an important role in sealing the building against water and air, as required by building regulations. The window sill must allow easy flow of water when it rains, this part makes the connection with the window carpentry of the building.
Depending on its construction the shapes may vary but as you can see on the concrete PBM window support, it has a rejingot which is the raised part at the back. This part is the link between masonry and carpentry. When we go down we meet the sloping tablet that avoids the stagnation of water, a vertical nose and a drop of water or clapboard, underneath, allowing to drain rainwater. The different window sill solutions
There are different construction techniques to set up a window sill. The first solution is the installation of polymer concrete window sill, which has fairly equivalent performance to conventional concrete. It is possible to lay prefabricated concrete supports. An alternative comes from the use of traditional terracotta briquettes taking care to properly carry out the hooding and the seating of bricks to avoid any water ingress.

The second technique offered to the craftsman is to make the window sill on site by pouring it into a wooden formwork with metal or polyester molding. In order to facilitate the work, the mold must be greased before pouring.
Finally, the last solution is the recovery of old window sill in good condition, for example those made of natural stone. Whether it is granite window sills, sandstone or limestone, the window sill will have to be integrated into the structure. For sealing it will be necessary to adapt the mortar according to the hardness of the stone.
